21 NEPTUNE’S VOLCANO

Assault rifles roared, blasting through the sounds of the machinery. Bullets smacked against the scaffolding, always just where Jimmy had been a split-second before. He had to keep running. But there was one problem.

Every bullet that hit the metal scaffolding sent up a bright orange spark—and the air was thick with oil fumes. As suddenly as they’d started, the soldiers stopped shooting. A big enough spark could cause even worse sabotage than Jimmy would have been able to manage on his own. Their commanding officer must have realised—but it was too late.

Jimmy kept running round the walls, circling the entire hall, swinging on the rope. He glanced down, just in time to see a river of golden flames erupting across the lower levels of scaffolding.

As one, the SAS soldiers started climbing again. There was no way down now. The fire moved so fast Jimmy thought it was a bolt of lightning. In no time, the floor of the hall was an inferno. The heat was so intense it burned the inside of his mouth as he breathed. Without his mask, Jimmy knew his face would have blistered. The light was so bright below him that at first he couldn’t look. Instead, he saw the flashing orange illuminating the black SAS figures as they clambered higher and higher for safety. The team of Britain’s fighting elite were reboarding their chopper.

When he finally did look down, Jimmy realised why their priority had changed from killing him to surviving. The flames were licking the outsides of the storage tanks. If Jimmy was wrong and these giant units didn’t contain missiles, but were actually vast lakes of oil…He didn’t want to imagine the destruction.

Jimmy pulled himself into the scaffolding. He pelted along the walkways, climbing to the next level at every opportunity. He knew his only chance was to somehow escape on the helicopter. Getting away on a chopper full of his enemy wouldn’t be easy, but it had to be better than staying on the inside of an erupting volcano.

He wiped his visor. The edges were blackened from the flames and the base’s sprinkler system was blasting him with water. Even with the help of the rain, it didn’t seem to be controlling the flames, but it was certainly making it hard for Jimmy to see where he was going. There were only two levels above him now. He kept running.

A siren blasted through the noise of the fire, but Jimmy blanked it out to concentrate on the steady patter of his strides. His breathing stung his throat. Black smoke was everywhere and it was growing thicker by the second.

Even while he choked for air, Jimmy realised that he might have saved thousands of lives. He still didn’t know whether the missiles were inside these tanks, but wherever they were hidden, surely the base would at least be too damaged to fire them. More likely, it would be destroyed completely. All Jimmy had to do now was find a way to safety.
